National Repertory Orchestra

Do you think you might be interested in the National Repertory Orchestra's Community Link program? Please, let me tell you about it!

First a word about the composition of the orchestra: We have approximately 90 musicians, 7 interns and 7 summer staff who come from all across the US and from many foreign countries. These are young people (ages 18 to 28) who are preparing to play/work for major orchestras around the world. They are committed, talented, hard working individuals. You'll delight in the quality of music they produce.  The Community Link program hooks up the musicians who arrive (June 13 this year) with a family in the community. They do NOT live with the family but use them as a resource and as a "home away from home". Based on information I will ask of you, I match up the musicians with couples/families. The musicians and interns receive their apartments and a small stipend for food as a part of their experience here, but I did say that their stipend for food was small, right?

The first area of concern is that you get to know them. Usually families and musicians meet at the Welcome Picnic the first Wednesday, June 16.  What better way to get to know them than to eat together. It is my hope that all host families call their "kids" and see them (have them come to dinner? Go out to breakfast? Lunch? you have the idea, feed them!) at least once a week.  Some families like doing it formally at their home, some families are very fluid and like to go out to eat, some like to invite only their musician(s), some families like for their musicians to bring friends. There is no right or wrong way, just call them, check out their schedules, check on their health, make sure they know they are cared about, and set up a time to get together.

I find that a lot of kids who come for the summer are interested in hiking, so that may be a point of common interest. I was amazed last year at the number of musicians and interns who climbed many "fourteeners"!! Or, perhaps you like to take "day drives" to see different parts of Colorado, and so does your musician. There is no right or wrong here. And don't feel that you have to make a huge production out of dinner---they are so happy to have a family and to be fed that you really do NOT need china and crystal!! You may want them to come on their day off, or it may be easier to have them come on a rehearsal day after rehearsal. The key to success with dinners is to stay flexible.  And leftovers. Making extra food and sending the dinner leftovers home with them is so very helpful as they then have to just "nuke it" and another dinner is ready for them. Right now I'm already saving plastic containers that I can send home with our "kids"!

If you do not live in the area near Breckenridge, I attempt to assign musicians to you who have a car. Depending on the number of musicians who drive out in cars (usually about 20% of them), this can be easily done or can be quite difficult. Are you ready to come get them and take them home if needed? I need to know that.

You'll also serve as a resource: if he/she breaks a tooth, you'd be the logical person to call to see which dentist to use. If they are sick, they may ask which doctor to call.

Almost weekly I arrange activities for the kids' days off. We go rafting, to a Rockies' game, we take a hike up to Mohawk Lake, for example, and have a picnic thereafter, etc.  The host families are ALWAYS welcome to join in the fun, and none of the activities are mandatory.

If I have left questions unanswered, please don't hesitate to call me at 970-453-7337, 970-485-1827 or motherdog9@aol.com and chat about this program. We'll be out of the country and perhaps away from e-mail from April 1 - 25.

Now, as for the information that I'd like about you:

Your first and last names
Your home (physical) address
Your mailing address
Your phone numbers, cell and home
Do you have pets? If so, which kind (allergy problems)?
What do you like to do here in Summit County? Hike? Boat? Ride Camels?
Is there a favored instrument that you'd like to host? (This is for people who played a certain instrument during their lives and are very keen to host someone who plays that same instrument)
How many musicians are you interested in hosting? (normal is 1 or 2, but some people want more)
Is there something else you'd like to tell me?

Thank you in advance for being willing to become a host family.  I appreciate it very much.

Kind regards,

Barbara Calvin
