2009 NRO Concertmaster Oscar Soler will return to Summit County for a fundraiser on January 23, 2010.
January may be a cold, blustery month, but Piazolla's Histoire du Tango and Rodrigo Siete's Conciones Valencianas, transcribed by Rosalie Gilbert, will turn on the heat with a passionate performace on the 23rd when NRO Alumni Concertmaster Oscar Soler [bio] and Rosalie Gilbert [bio] come to the Keystone Center to play the violin and harp for us. At 6:30 you'll nosh on hearty appetizers and wine while you chat with friends both new and old. The music will begin at 7:15PM and will include solos and duets by these two talented musicians. All this for only $25 per person.

A native of Caracas, Venezuela, Oscar Soler has been delighting audiences with his solo performances since he was a young child. His debut performance was with the Jovenes Arcos de Caracas the age of 7. Thereafter Oscar was invited to play with the Orquesta Gran Mariscal de Ayacuco, the Virtuosi de Caracas and the Orquesta Juvenil de Caracs. Summer and undergraduate festivals he has participated in include: The Meadowmount School of music, the Aspen Music Festival—for which he was granted a fellowship, the National Repertory Orchestra in 2008 (assistant concertmaster), and again in 2009 he was in Breckenridge for the NRO, this time assuming the responsible position of Concertmaster.
Oscar Soler is a member of the Altamira String Quartet, involving himself in all kinds of creative programming for community service. This includes a presentation at the Shaker Family Fun Fest in the Shaker Family Center, performing for cancer recovery centers, retirement homes and hospitals. He belongs to Mu Phi Epsilon, a non-profit organization whose purpose is to bring classical music to the general public.
Professionally, Mr Soler was a member of the Akron Symphony Orchestra and has performed as a part of the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, The Erie Philharmonic and the Canton Syphony. When he performed the violin solos of Richard Straus’ Ein Heldenleben, the Cleveland Plain Dealer said he applied “generous allure” to the pieces.
After earning his Bachelor of Music degree in May 2007 and his Master of Music degree in Violin performance and Suzuki pedagogy in May of 2009, he is now in residence in Boulder, CO, where he is pursuing his Doctorate of Musical Arts at the University of Colorado. He is studying with renown violinists Edward Dusinberre from the Takacs Quartet and Lina Bahn.
Rosalie Gilbert is an active professional harpist, with over a decade of experience in solo, ensemble, and freelance performance. She received her Bachelor of Music degree in harp performance from The Cleveland Institute of Music (CIM) in May 2008, and is currently working on a Master of Music degree at The University of Colorado (CU). At CU, Ms. Gilbert has been appointed the harp department teaching assistant. She also is the harp instructor at the Parlando School for the Arts in Boulder, and maintains a private teaching studio. Rosalie Gilbert has performed as a member of the Jefferson Symphony, the Cleveland Pops
Orchestra, the CU Symphony Orchestra and Opera Orchestra, the CIM Orchestra and Opera Orchestra, and the University Circle Wind Ensemble. This season, she will also be performing with the Timberline Symphony. Other appearances include a concerto performance with the Arapahoe Philharmonic, and solo and chamber music recitals in several states throughout the US including Ohio, Maryland, Virginia, Maine, Texas, and Colorado.
Most recently, Ms. Gilbert was a finalist in the Ekstrand Memorial Graduate Performance Competition at CU, and won first place in the Arapahoe Philharmonic’s T. Gordon Parks Memorial Concerto Competition in January 2009. Additionally, Rosalie Gilbert was named an Osher Scholar in 2008, received a Maryland Governor’s Merit Award in 2004, and a Maryland Distinguished Scholar in the Arts award in 2003. Among her festival credits are appearances at the Pierre Monteux School (ME), the International Festival at Roundtop (TX), and the National Festival Orchestra at Carnegie Hall. Ms. Gilbert’s teachers have included Janet Harriman, Yolanda Kondonassis, Jeanne Chalifoux,
Alice Chalifoux, and Paula Page. A native of Washington, DC, Rosalie Gilbert is happy to be performing, teaching, and studying in Boulder.
