Erick Wood, a percussionist and the 2009 Stage Manager was recently featured in a video produced by the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA). Wood first came to the NRO as a percussionist in 2007 and returned in the past season as the Stage Manager.

In his free time, Wood works as a CCHA Official and competes in triathlons. "I really enjoy working with the CCHA. It gives me the chance to travel and participate in something I love - hockey," said Wood. Wood also said, "I feel that the NRO prepared me for a career in professional music. I had the experience to play a lot of repertoire with a group of very talented musicians."

  • July 8th features Robert Thies [bio], pianist, NRO 1997 Alumni, in the Prokofiev Piano Concerto No. 3 with Joann Falletta [bio] as guest Conductor.
  • July 15th features Richard Killmer [bio], first oboist ever(1960) with the NRO when it was called the Blue Jean Symphony and performed in Estes Park, Colorado. Mr. Kilmer will perform the Bach Double with an NRO violinist.
  • August 1st hear Joseph Alessi [bio], NRO 1980 Alumni, principal trombonist from the
    New York Philharmonic.
  • August 5th marks the return of Gerard Schwarz [bio] to the NRO!
  • August 7th closes out the season with Emmanuelle Boisvert [bio], NRO 1985 Alumni, concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She will be performing the Beethoven Violin Concerto.
The National Repertory Orchestra Alumni represent some of the most successful and prominent musicians in the world. The four musicians that are being featured in our 50th season are all from different geographic areas, different musical timbres, different eras of the NRO’s past and have found their successes in different ways.

Robert Thies has found success in many avenues of the musical world. He became the only American to win first prize in a Russian piano competition since Van Cliburn in 1958 when he won Gold in the 2nd Annual International Prokofiev Competition in 1995. Because of this early success he has had the opportunity to perform concertos all over the world. Mr. Thies is also a very successful chamber musician and often performs with his Pantoum Trio. Being a pianist in the Los Angeles studios affords Mr. Thies many opportunities to play a variety of styles and work with the panoply of great musicians there.

Mr. Killmer is the original oboist from the first season of the National Repertory Orchestra, then called the Blue Jeans Symphony. After eleven seasons as solo oboe of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra Mr. Killmer has become one of the most successful master teachers of any instrument. Many of his students have gone on to become leaders in ensembles across the nation. Lucky for us, Mr. Killmer makes an annual pilgrimage to Summit County to fly fish and we were able to fit this performance into his fishing schedule.

Mr. Alessi is the most important trombone player in the world not only because of his position with the New York Philharmonic but because of the impact he has had on the instrument as a solo voice. Mr. Alessi has been relentless in commissioning pieces and exploring the extant literature for the trombone. Additionally, nobody has produced more successful students than Mr. Alessi. There is not a trombonist alive today that has not been affected by Mr. Alessi’s talents.

Ms. Boisvert was the first woman to win the position of Concertmaster with a major orchestra in the United States when she won her current position with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra at the tender age of 25. She has been a soloist with many orchestras across the country and makes an annual appearance with the DSO. Ms. Boisvert was Concertmaster of the NRO in 1985. We are honored to have Ms. Boisvert for closing night of our 50th Anniversary season.

Jessica was recently named 2009 Lincoln Center Festival Immigration, Symposium, and Company Management Intern. Each summer, the Lincoln Center Festival presents a wide array of extraordinary dance, music, opera, and theater works from around the world. Jessica’s 3 part internship will give her the final 8 credits she needs to finish her Masters in Arts Administration at Florida State University in Tallahassee. Jessica feels that her NRO festival experience had a bearing on her receiving this prestigious position. She will be busy working with international artists on their Visa’s, setting up educational sessions for the symposium, and assisting festival producers. She received her BM in Vocal Performance from the University of Connecticut. Good Luck in New York City, Jessica!

Washington, D.C. - Conductor JoAnn Falletta and country songwriter and singer Lee Greenwood have been confirmed by the U.S. Senate to serve on the National Council on the Arts, the advisory body of the National Endowment for the Arts. The confirmation follows their nomination by President George W. Bush to serve on this advisory body to the Arts Endowment.

JoAnn Falletta is a member of the NRO Sustainers Organization and a frequent guest conductor. She has been quoted as saying: " All of us are so worried about the future of the symphony orchestra in our country, about the future of classical music in our country. But when I work with the NRO I am not worried any more because I feel they are the future and the brilliance and the optimism the dedication to excellence that is part of who they are. I think they will bring us a very bright future."

Lee Greenwood, made a special appearance and performed with the full NRO orchestra at the 2007 NRO Gala fund raiser held at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.

Elaine Maltezos, NRO Recording Engineer, (2007-8) wins the First Cat5 Music Publishing Songwriter's Showcase and Competition held at the University of Miami's Gusman Concert Hall with her song entitled "Not my Own". Elaine was selected from the 12 Finalists showcased during the competition. Winning this competition took her to the next level of performances as she accepted the opportunity to play her winning song as the opening act for the Bruce Hornsby and Steve Miller Concert at the BankUnited Center at the University of Miami. Elaine describes her style as Acoustic Jazz/Pop/Folk. Elaine will graduate in 2010 from the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music with her BM, emphasis in Commercial Music composition and production. What an impressive start!
